Tour Overview

Climb Kilimanjaro via the 6-Day Machame Route

If Marangu is the "Coca Cola" route, then the Machame Route is the legendary "Whiskey" route. As the second most popular and arguably the most scenic path on the mountain, it offers breathtaking panoramas as you ascend to the Roof of Africa.

This 6-day itinerary is crafted for physically fit individuals with prior hiking experience. It condenses the ascent while still incorporating the crucial "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization strategy at Lava Tower. Throughout your journey, you will be fully supported by our elite mountain crew, enjoying premium tented camps and hot meals served in dedicated dining tents.

An exhilarating, faster-paced journey designed to maximize scenic exposure and acclimatization for fit trekkers on their way to Uhuru Peak.

Day 01

Machame Gate (1,828m) to Machame Camp (3,020m)

Your day begins early with breakfast and a 45-minute drive from Moshi to the Machame Gate. After registering, you enter the montane rainforest immediately. The trail can be soggy and slippery, so preparation is key. Enjoy a welcome lunch stop before reaching camp in the late afternoon, where your porters will have your premium tent prepared and hot washing water ready.

Montane Forest 10.8 km 7 hours
Day 02

Machame Camp (3,020m) to Shira Camp (3,847m)

Rise early and climb out of the forest canopy, transitioning into the moorland zone on a gentler gradient. After lunch, you will traverse a rocky ridge onto the Shira plateau, granting you stunning easterly views of the Western Breach and its glaciers. Prepare for sub-zero temperatures as night falls on this exposed plateau.

Moorland 5.2 km 6 hours
Day 03

Shira Camp to Lava Tower (4,642m) to Barranco Camp (3,984m)

Trek east into a semi-desert landscape toward the towering Lava Tower. This tough 5-hour ascent takes you to 4,642m before you descend into the Barranco Valley. This intentional altitude drop provides crucial acclimatization benefits while offering phenomenal sunset views below the Great Barranco Wall.

Semi-Desert 10.7 km 7 hours
Day 04

Barranco Camp (3,984m) to Barafu Camp (4,681m)

Conquer the imposing Barranco Wall—a thrilling and beautiful scramble topping out just below the Heim Glacier. The route continues through the Karanga Valley (your final water source) before connecting to the Mweka route and ascending to Barafu Hut. This stark, exposed camp rests on a stony ridge where you will prepare for your midnight summit push.

Day 05

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,090m)

Awake at 23:30 for a hot drink before beginning your ascent in the dark. You will battle heavy scree toward Stella Point (5,739m) to witness an unparalleled sunrise. Pushing through the final snowy stretch, you reach Uhuru Peak—the true summit! After celebrating, you descend rapidly back to Barafu for a short rest, then continue down into the forest to Mweka Camp.
