Tour Overview

Climb Kilimanjaro via the 6-Day Umbwe Route

The Umbwe Route is renowned as the steepest, shortest, and most direct path to the Roof of Africa. Highly demanding and visually spectacular, this route is strictly reserved for experienced, highly fit trekkers seeking an ultimate physical and mental challenge.

Unlike standard itineraries, this exclusive 6-day expedition approaches the summit via the thrilling Western Breach. It grants you the rare opportunity to spend a night at the staggering altitude of Crater Camp (5,700m), situated right next to the Furtwängler Glacier. Because you sleep so close to the peak, your final summit push is a relatively short, leisurely 2-hour morning hike—a stark and rewarding contrast to the standard midnight slog.

6-Day Umbwe Route Itinerary

An uncompromising, rapid ascent that scales the Western Breach and culminates in a spectacular night atop the crater rim.

Day 01

Umbwe Gate (1,600m) to Umbwe Camp (2,900m)

The day begins with a drive to Machame Gate for registration, followed by a transfer through coffee and banana plantations to Umbwe Gate. The trail immediately ascends sharply on a forestry track winding through dense rainforest. The path steepens as we climb a ridge between two rivers, arriving at Umbwe Camp, perched between ancient trees and thick undergrowth.

Rain Forest 5,249ft to 9,514ft 5-7 hours
Day 02

Umbwe Camp (2,900m) to Barranco Camp (3,950m)

Shortly after leaving camp, the forest thins into rockier terrain with straggly, moss-covered trees. The path continues along a narrow, spectacular ridge offering majestic glimpses of Kilimanjaro. Approaching the Barranco Valley, the route flattens and descends slightly to Barranco Camp, providing a memorable sunset below the Great Barranco Wall.

Moorland 9,514ft to 12,959ft 6 hours
Day 03

Barranco Camp to Lava Tower (4,630m) to Arrow Glacier Camp (4,800m)

We hike up a steep, rocky path toward Lava Tower with views of Mt. Meru piercing the clouds. From Lava Tower, we diverge from the standard routes and turn toward the Western Breach, taking a steep climb to Arrow Glacier Camp. Vegetation disappears here, leaving stark rock and scree. This exposed, freezing camp requires your warmest gear.

Alpine Desert 12,959ft to 15,748ft 5-6 hours
Day 04

Arrow Glacier (4,800m) to Crater Camp (5,700m)

Today we wind our way up the Western Breach—a non-technical but demanding climbing route—to the crater rim. Arriving at the rim, you are met with astonishing views of the Northern Ice Fields and the Furtwängler Glacier. We set up at Crater Camp. Time permitting, we can hike to the massive Ash Pit. Expect extreme cold and possible snow at this staggering altitude.

Arctic / Glacier 15,748ft to 18,700ft 5 hours
Day 05

Crater Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Unlike other routes, our final ascent to Uhuru Peak is only 800 feet and is undertaken after a warm sunrise breakfast. This 2-hour walk through the snow to the summit is a brilliant contrast to the midnight slogs of other routes. After celebrating, we begin a massive descent, stopping briefly at Barafu before continuing down to the rich moorlands of Mweka Camp.

Arctic to Forest 2 hrs up / 7-8 hrs down 9-10 hours total
Day 06

Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,650m)

Following a celebratory breakfast with the crew, we set off for a scenic 3 to 4-hour descent through a lush tropical forest alive with birdcalls. At Mweka Gate, we finalize our descent, enjoy a celebratory drink, and load the vehicles for the drive back to Moshi for a highly anticipated hot shower and certificate presentation.

Rain Forest 10,170ft to 5,413ft 3-4 hours
