Climb Kilimanjaro via the 7-Day Lemosho Route

Considered by many to be the most beautiful path up Mount Kilimanjaro, the Lemosho Route approaches the mountain from the west. It begins in an unspoiled, remote rainforest where wildlife sightings are common, before crossing the spectacular Shira Plateau.

This 7-day itinerary provides an excellent balance of breathtaking scenery and vital acclimatization. While it requires a high level of physical fitness—particularly on day five, which combines two stages into one long trekking day—it rewards climbers with varied terrain, low initial foot traffic, and a fully supported premium camping experience led by our elite mountain crew.

Your Journey

7-Day Lemosho Route Itinerary

A beautifully diverse and challenging journey, crossing the Shira Plateau and conquering the Southern Circuit on your way to Uhuru Peak.

Day 01

Londorossi Gate to Forest Camp

We depart Arusha/Moshi for a scenic drive to Londorossi Gate to complete entry formalities, followed by another short drive to the Lemosho trailhead. After lunch, we commence our trek through dense, undisturbed rainforest that winds to our first camp, keeping an eye out for local wildlife.

Rain Forest 7,800ft to 9,500ft 6 km (3-4 hrs)
Day 02

Forest Camp to Shira Camp 1

We leave the forest canopy behind, entering a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock draped with lichen. Ascending through lush rolling hills and crossing several streams, we reach the Shira Ridge before dropping gently to Shira 1 camp, enjoying amazing views of Kibo across the plateau.

Moorland 9,500ft to 11,500ft 8 km (5-6 hrs)
Day 03

Shira Camp 1 to Shira 2 to Moir Hut

We spend a full day exploring one of the highest plateaus on earth. A gentle eastward walk across the plateau leads to Shira 2 camp. From there, we continue to Moir Hut, a secluded site at the base of Lent Hills. Short walks on Lent Hills provide a phenomenal acclimatization opportunity.

Moorland 11,500ft to 13,800ft 14 km (5-7 hrs)
Day 04

Moir Hut to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

We trek east up a ridge before turning southeast toward the Lava Tower (16,000ft), also known as the "Shark's Tooth." After reaching the tower, we descend to Barranco Hut at 13,000ft. Though ending the day near your starting elevation, this is a vital "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization day.

Semi Desert 13,800ft to 13,000ft 7 km (4-6 hrs)
Day 05

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

A long, demanding day begins by scrambling up the steep Barranco Wall. We pass through the Karanga Valley and push directly up to Barafu Hut, combining two stages into one. Having completed the South Circuit, you enjoy multi-angle views of the summit. We make camp early to rest and prepare for the midnight ascent.

Alpine Desert 13,000ft to 15,300ft 9 km (8-10 hrs)
Day 06

Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut

Between midnight and 2am, we begin our push to the summit through heavy scree toward Stella Point (18,600ft) to witness a spectacular sunrise. We push on through the snow to Uhuru Peak (19,345ft)—the highest point in Africa. After summiting, we descend straight down to Mweka Hut, stopping at Barafu for a quick lunch.

Arctic / Scree 5 km up / 12 km down 11-14 hours total
Day 07

Mweka Camp to Moshi

After breakfast, we make our final descent through the rainforest to the Mweka Park Gate, where summit certificates are awarded. The trail can be wet and muddy, making trekking poles helpful. From the gate, a short walk leads to Mweka Village, where a vehicle will meet you for the drive back to your hotel.

Rain Forest 10,000ft to 5,400ft 10 km (3-4 hrs)
