Your Journey

7-Day Machame Route Itinerary

A carefully structured journey designed to balance trekking, acclimatization, and rest as you make your way toward Uhuru Peak.

Day 01

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Pick up from Salsalnero Hotel in Moshi at 9:30am. We drive 50 minutes through Machame village to the National Park Gate. Leaving the gate, we walk through the rainforest on a winding trail up a ridge. Gaiters and trekking poles are recommended for potentially muddy terrain.

Rain Forest 5,400ft to 9,400ft 11 km (5-7 hrs)
Day 02

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After breakfast, we leave the rainforest glades and continue on an ascending path. We cross a little valley and walk along a steep, rocky ridge covered with heather. The route then turns west into a river gorge before arriving at Shira campsite for rest and dinner.

Moorland 9,400ft to 12,500ft 5 km (4-6 hrs)
Day 03

Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

From the Shira Plateau, we head east up a ridge, turning southeast toward the Lava Tower ("Shark's Tooth") at 16,000ft. We then descend to Barranco Hut. Though you end the day at a similar elevation to where you started, this "climb high, sleep low" profile is crucial for acclimatization.

Semi Desert 12,500ft to 13,000ft 10 km (6-8 hrs)
Day 04

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the famous Barranco Wall, leading into the Karanga Valley campsite. This is a shorter day intentionally designed to aid in your acclimatization process.

Alpine Desert 13,000ft to 13,100ft 5 km (4-5 hrs)
Day 05

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

We leave Karanga and hit the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail, continuing up to Barafu Hut. You have now completed the South Circuit, offering views of the summit from multiple angles. We set up camp early to rest, dine, and prepare for the midnight summit push.

Alpine Desert 13,100ft to 15,300ft 4 km (4-5 hrs)
Day 06

Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut

Beginning between midnight and 2am, we ascend through heavy scree toward Stella Point (18,600ft) for a magnificent sunrise. Another hour of snowy trekking brings you to Uhuru Peak—the Roof of Africa! We then descend directly to Mweka Hut, stopping at Barafu for lunch.

Arctic 15,300ft to 19,345ft to 10,000ft 17 km (11-14 hrs total)
Day 07

Mweka Camp to Moshi

After our final mountain breakfast, we descend to the Mweka Park Gate where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. The lower elevations can be wet and muddy. From the gate, it's a short hike to Mweka Village where our vehicle awaits to drive you back to Moshi.

Rain Forest 10,000ft to 5,400ft 10 km (3-4 hrs)
