Your Journey

8-Day Lemosho Route Itinerary

A masterfully paced journey that maximizes both scenic exposure and crucial altitude acclimatization on your way to Uhuru Peak.

Day 01

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa (2,650m)

After a 1.5-hour drive from Moshi, we check in at the Londorossi Gate. Day 1 is a fairly easy and beautiful introduction to the mountain, featuring a gentle 3 to 4-hour climb through pristine, undisturbed rainforest to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp.

Rain Forest 10 km 3 hours
Day 02

Mti Mkubwa (2,650m) to Shira One Camp (3,609m)

A few hours of walking will see the end of the forest canopy and the beginning of a climb through the heather and moorland zones. We ascend toward the edge of the Shira Caldera, finishing our day at the highly scenic Shira One Camp.

Heather / Moorland 12 km 5-6 hours
Day 03

Shira One Camp (3,609m) to Shira Two Camp (3,849m)

Today is spent on a gentle, acclimatizing hike across the spectacular Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on earth. We have the option for side trips to Shira Cathedral before settling at the first high camp of Shira Two. (Note: From here, the trail links with the Machame Route).

Moorland 5 km 5-6 hours
Day 04

Shira Two Camp (3,849m) to Barranco Hut (3,948m)

The real work of climbing Kilimanjaro begins here. Today’s main feature is a slow climb up to the Lava Tower, followed by a strategic descent to the beautiful Barranco Camp. This implements the crucial "climb high, sleep low" principle for optimal altitude adjustment.

Semi Desert 6 km 5 hours
Day 05

Barranco Hut (3,900m) to Karanga Valley (3,963m)

After an exhilarating climb up the Great Barranco Wall—a fun and imposing scramble—we continue around the southern circuit trail. A short day of trekking brings us to another highly scenic location at Karanga Camp, providing extra rest and acclimatization.

Alpine Desert 4 km 3.5 hours
Day 06

Karanga Valley (3,963m) to Barafu Hut (4,600m)

The trail from Karanga to Barafu ascends into the bleak, high alpine desert of Kilimanjaro. Barafu Camp is a basic, exposed camp entirely focused on preparing you for the summit. You will rest, hydrate, and prepare your gear for the midnight push.

Alpine Desert 4 km 3.5 hours
Day 07

Barafu Camp to The Summit (5,896m) to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

This is a midnight "Alpine Summit" push. By leaving early, we aim to reach the summit by dawn. After celebrating at Uhuru Peak, we make a massive descent back down to Mweka Camp for the sake of improved oxygen levels and recovery.

Arctic / Scree 5km up / 12km down 12 hours total
Day 08

Mweka Hut (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,828m)

Today is a short, celebratory walk down through the lush rainforest towards Mweka Gate. We arrive at the gate by noon to sign out, receive your summit certificates, and meet your vehicle for the return trip to Moshi for a well-deserved shower.

Rain Forest 10 km 4 hours
